Roof Goops [RE-wrenches]

Hello y'All,
I've worked with many roofers over the last 30 years, they all
recommend using urethane caulks.
Sikaflex, Sonneborn NP-1, and at Home Despot PL polyurethane. It is
available in several colors, and cleans up with paint thinner.
Pay special attention to the applications sheet in the case. The use
of backer rod helps prevent the caulk tearing away from the two
surfaces intended for sealing. While this is not applicable to much of
what we do, it describes an application of the theory used for caulking,
ie. stick to each of the surfaces intended, and stretch across the gap
between them. What we want to avoid is having the caulk tear away from
one of the sealed surfaces.
On another note, some installers around here like the butyl tape
caulking. My roofer said to cut a piece and leave it in a glass of water
for several days. It will dissolve. Avoid using butyl tape.
On the job yesterday the contractor's teenage son was in charge of
caulking and made quite a mess, tracking the stuff all over the roof,
tools, his clothes, and the ladders. Learn where the caulk will do some
good and use it sparingly.
