finding those rafters... [RE-wrenches]

Bill,

I beg to differ, a stud finder with deep scan capability is still worse at
locating rafters than a hammer. I bet I have tried all of them ‹ low $ to
big $ -- makes no difference. A hammer and a pilot drill bit are the best
tools I have found.

Jeff,

Another way to plug pilot holes is with a wooden dowel and mastic. It
usually has the same thermal coefficients of expansion/contraction as the
roof deck and won¹t work itself out. Hopefully, all pilot holes will fall
under the flashing!

If you can easily get into the attic, you can always nail blocks between the
rafters and use whatever jack spacing makes the most sense.
