Group,
Over the weekend, I got a call from a customer who's Bergey XL.1 fell to the
ground. Not the tower, just the machine itself. It turns out the yaw shaft
broke in two just above the slip rings. Bergey says they've seen "a few"
like this as a result of a casting defect. it was probably already weak, and
the hurricane-remant winds pushed it over the edge, literally. Anybody heard
of this before??
PS. I also had a customer's generator shed, and therefore generator (a
Kohler 8.5 RMY) burn to the ground last weekend, as the result of a propane
leak, so the fire marshall suspects. Thank God the structure was 100' away
from the house and there was no wind. Never install a generator inside an
attached structure!!!
