MPP and battery charging. [RE-wrenches]

Group,
We seem to be getting more and more modules with higher max power
voltages. Does this mean that we HAVE to use MPPT charge controllers to get anywhere
close to decent charge rates? I have stayed away from expensive controllers
so far and also really like the accumulated amp hours in the Trace C series but
I do like the specs on the MX60. I would be interested in some experiences
and if a Trace C40 IS used, then I am asking if best performance will be with
the lowest peak power voltage module?
