News Release from the US Department of Energy:

In his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening, President Bush announced a $1.2 billion FreedomFUEL Initiative to reverse America's growing dependence on foreign oil by developing the technology needed for commercially viable hydrogen-powered fuel cells - a way to power cars, trucks, homes and businesses that produces no pollution and no greenhouse gases. FreedomFUEL will invest $720 million in new funding over the next five years to develop the technologies and infrastructure needed to produce, store, and distribute hydrogen for use in fuel cell vehicles and electricity generation. Combined with the FreedomCAR (Cooperative Automotive Research) Initiative, President Bush is proposing a total of $1.7 billion over the next five years to develop hydrogen-powered fuel cells.

Just thought that you would like to know the following bit of trivia:

Virginia Seacrist created the phrase "Hydrogen -- Your Freedom Fuel" and gave it freely to the public.

Dave Bruderly presented the phrase to the USDoE Hydrogen Roadmap Workshop held at the Marriott in WDC one year ago.  Jay Keller, Marshall Gilmore, Jeff Serfass, Bill Clapper and many, many others have pushed hard for USDoE to initiate an aggressive hydrogen fuel initiative.

Subsequently Dave used the phrase to advocate immediate passage of an aggressive federal program to deploy, not just research and development, but actual deployment of hydrogen fuels during his recent campaign for Congress.

The FreedomFUEL initiative is a huge step towards commercialization of hydrogen fuels.  It recognizes that the fuel is the primary problem, not the engine, but the fuel.  This initiative is the result of many years of hard work by many, many dedicated engineers and scientists who share a Vision of pollution-free and renewable fuels and who will continue to work towards widespread implementation as soon as possible.
