Ok everyone... deep breath ...in through the nose.... out through the mouth
one more time... aahh good.

Hi Bill,

Visiting a series of bad installs? Correcting problem installations makes
up for over 50% of my solar business.

I hear about many more bad installations when the disgusted owners call me
for help. The same owners who seem to be able to find the "dude" I
mentioned in my prior email to install it originally but can't find me until
after the whole thing has turned into ca-ca and the "dude's" phone has been
disconnected. You think my being certified will change that? Many of these
folks call me expecting me to be able to magically make their systems work
(by adjusting a dial or flipping a switch). You know the system they
bought, "System 2 -- Conserving Home -- $8,395". Except no one told them
that Conversing home doesn't mean just turning the lights off when you
leave. They have about 20k in it and it still doesn't run their "Conserving
Home". But many of them would rather sit on their broken 20k toy then pay
me what I tell them it's going to cost for me just to look at it. Actually
it at that time most of them tell me that "my brother in-law is an
electrician so I'll just have him fix it". We've had this conservation
before haven't we. Deja vu all over again.

I honestly would love nothing better than to go out for free and fix these
systems. Maybe I could afford to donate my labor but these folks won't pay
for the material that they still really need. Minor stuff, such as over
current protection and appropriately sized battery cables.

Again, I'm all for qualified people doing PV installs. Can someone whose
never installed a system do it right? That ain't none of my business. I
know the answer, but still it's not for me to decide. As Hank Jr. says "if
you'd mind your own business then you wouldn't be minding mine". But if the
person considering spending over $20,000 on PV system won't take a few
minutes to visit a recent installation of his potential contractor then he
is being irresponsible. We can't stop bad installs, no matter what we do.
The only person to blame is the homeowner, period. It's his money and he
will spend it just like he wants to.

But Michael is right, this is just a bunch of talk and no matter what words
of wisdom we feel so important to impart to this list... no one's mind is
going to be changed. At least we are all doing what we feel is right for
the industry.
