This is true industry leadership and I for one am really grateful for the
standard that SMA has set in the US market.
When the California Energy Commission set the full five year warranty rules
for utiltity inter-tie systems their intention, as I understand it, was to
encourage the solar industry toward higher standards of accountability and
reliability. (Remember the tax credit days of the seventies?  Sorry,
nightmare flashback.)  This is not only commendable, and what our adolescent
industry needs, it is what customers, and many installers want.
