Graham,
Brand Electronics can provide a little system that can power an LED
scrolling sign and provide input of data to a computer. What you do with the
data after that is up to you (or the city). Total cost for the LED sign,
brains and sensors (1 AC, 1 DC, for power, current and voltage) is about
$650. More sensors for $150 / 2 sensors. Sensors can be over 1000 feet from
the brain. This does not need a continuous computer connection, as the brain
does store some data for later downloading. But realistically, you need to
have a computer there.
The benefit of buying from Ethan is that he's willing to work with you to
make it happen. The downside is, you need to work with him, because the
manuals are pretty light.

Hey Guy's,
The system that needs monitoring is only 6 kW and will be installed on
an Integrated Waste Management building owned by a medium sized city.
They have an educational center on site, with worms and composters,
recycling kiosks, etc. The building is open to the public and school
kids are frequently bussed in. They want real-time monitoring on a CRT
or equivalent and even a means for kids to shade or disorient they array
to watch the fluctuations. This will be a fun job. The city is more
interested in the system monitoring capabilities than the energy
contribution to their municipally owned grid.
Thanks,
Graham Owen
