We use a lot of multi wire branch circuits.  A 120/240 volt circuit can 
have 240 volts between conductors while limiting the maximum voltage to 
ground at 120 volts, with a center tapped 240 volt transformer.  120 volts 
is a lot safer than 240.  Three phase wye connections have similar benefits.

It is my understand that British wiring does ground one of the conductors 
of their 240 volt circuits, giving the hot wire 240 volts to ground.  That 
was how it worked in Wales when I was there.
