E-W Roof Tops [RE-wrenches]

I've seen hot water panels on E-W roof tops oriented so that the tops and 
bottoms of the panels are parallel to the slope of the roof, and the front 
is facing south.  It would seem like this would be ok so long as shading 
from the peak wasn't a problem.

I've also seen them set up at odd angles, where the roof line isn't facing 
either N-S or E-W.
