Switches [RE-wrenches]

The rule is not specific about fuses or not in regards to the Air Cond.
disco, it simply says it is not allowed. I've found over and again that PG&E
does not have issue with fuses anymore. This seemed to have changed about
the same time that we were allowed to use a branch disco rather than the
early days of whole service disco. Obviously, a whole service fused disco
could pose a real nuisance. On my last 3 projects PG&E did not even put the
locks on it saying that the linemen will lock it out when needed only for
service. This sure makes a lot more sense to me. My most recent project has
an existing whole service manual generator transfer switch that can be
locked in any of the 3 positions. PG&E accepted the trans. sw. as a lock-out
(it certainly was not on the "Blessed" list) and acknowledged that if they
were to put a lock on it the customer could not transfer their gen. We all
walked away happy as I was told to "throw the switch".

I wish all of the wrenches could have similar sanity to deal with!

bad, I like the idea of a $10 disco that no one will ever use.

Isn't the problem with those that they have fuses in them, and the utility
wants no user-serviceable parts in the lockable disconnect? At least that's
the way PG&E described it to us when they nixed ours awhile back.

If the utility's lock is on the unit, and the fuse blows, the utility has to
come out to help change it.
