Ground fault protection may not have prevented the Solar Boost failure
but it can be very helpful in preventing the spread of the damage beyond
the original problem. I have seen wires fall out of loose melted
terminal blocks on numerous occasions with many "UL" listed products -
causing other problems to occur (such as battery short circuits).

Eliminating the ground fault protection and replacing it with fuses or
breakers in both the negative and positive conductors will not eliminate
the pssibility of risk or damage. Often a fault can be limited by the
material completing the fault circuit - so a fuse or breaker may not
trip (especially with a current limited energy source such as PV). There
are trade-offs involved with each method of protection.
