In this particular installation we installed the system meter in the
basement next to the house load center--totally inaccessible to any PNM
meter readers, to eliminate confusion. The meter was intended solely for
the owners to monitor their solar power production over time.

This was an easy upgrade for this installation, since the meter is in the
basement, directly below the inverters and through the wall. We piped
through the wall into the back of the meter enclosure, and then around the
corner to the loadcenter.

IMVHO, installing a system output meter on the exterior, accessible to the
utility companies and emergency services would be inviting confusion at best
and chaos at worst.

Enjoy the Sun!
