PV as an investment [RE-wrenches]

I often get asked as an engineer to calculate pay back.
I refuse on the basis that it is outside the scope of engineers to provide
financial forecasting.

In NZ the systems take 100 years to "pay back" if you simply compare current Kw
value generated to all the costs associated with putting in commissioning and
maintaining a system.

I point out that a roof integrated solar system requires minimal maintenance and
will pay for itself more than twice over during it's life time. This has been a
good 'one liner' for me.

The rest of the roof will never pay for itself and will have one third of the
life and require considerable maintenance.
