I learned a good trick from GE Energy Rentals (Formerly Young Generators).
They drive the rod in at a 45 degree angle with the top pointing towards
the parking lot.  After the gig, If they can't get the rod out by the usual
technique (spinning with vice grips), the chain up to the clamp and tow the
rod out with the truck (that is, if they don't think it is holding water in
a water line).
