Yo David,
Heavy trees and UHF mean trouble unless you can get your antennas 
above them. UHF doesn't actually REQUIRE line of site, but if you 
want decent reception-especially with data-you better damn well have 
it.
He eliminated the Starband because of slower than he'd like upload? 
If so, FORGET the UHF rig. Under the best conditions, he'll see less 
than 24KB. Sounds like he's gone off a bit half-cocked.
