Dave:

I think the UFC is the Uniform Fire Code.
It might also be a typo for UBC - Uniform Building Code.

Several years ago I was working at Photocomm in Grass Valley and we had to
build a separate building for our batteries.
This was because we shared the building with another tenant and the fire
marshal inspected using the UFC.
Fire Marshals have lots of power and, like inspectors, you don't want to get
on their bad side.
I had never heard of the UFC but the UFC has provisions for batteries that
are pretty scary.
One of them was a 4 hour fire protection for "batteries".
It didn't say how many, what type, or anything - just "batteries".
Rather than building a special concrete block room with a special fire door,
we built a separate shed outside in the parking lot.

The Surrette Web site shows 27 Lbs of acid for their Model S460 (L16 on
steroids).
This means your ok with (16) L-16 type batteries
Above that you may need to Put up a placard on the battery room.

You might check with your local fire marshal to see if you can read the
section of the UFC for the requirements.

If you have any questions or I can be of any further assistance please do
not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

John Berdner

List;

I received this query recently.

"What advice do you have for residential battery systems containing over
500 lbs of acid?
Article 64 of UFC and the right to know act for hazard materials on
the premiss?"

I do not know what the UFC is, so I am unfamiliar with it. Any help out
there?
