No direct experience running a system of the type you describe, but my
feeling is that if you decide to use the grid timer, it would be best to
shut down the grid during the period of least consumption, i.e. overnight.
This way you are powering loads (mostly) from the grid when consumption is
high, saving the battery power for stand-by. This assumes that the SW
charger/AC pass can keep up with the loads in real time.
Also consider preventing the SW from being grid-connected solely for the
purpose of float charging. It might be more efficient to install a small
float-charger to do that and offset any loads while disconnected from the
grid rather than run the monster transformers in the Trace as a phantom load.
Your post doesn't mention the customer's experience with the batteries
thus far, battery life, etc. Perhaps running the new system (mostly) like
the old generator-based system is an option?
