If you don't coat the terminals, you had BETTER use Hydrocaps! I've 
always used vaseline, giving every metallic surface a thin coating, 
BEFORE assembly. That way, hopefully, every crevice of the junction 
is sealed from spatter. Vaseline is considered to introduce little or 
no resistance (it squeezes out of the way). I have seen vaselined 
battery connections still clean after 15 years, with maybe a few 
spots of corrosion beginning to form.
