uni-solar [RE-wrenches]

Uni-Solar put in a group of 64 roofing modules on a park ranger station here
in Johnson County, KS back in 1994. I have been on the roof many times
(although it has been a while now) and I have seen no delamination. We do
get pretty hot here in KS in the summer as well as freeze/thaw and every
other kind of weather. These were the old UPM-880'a laminated on to a 3
foot metal standing seam product. It was a precursor to the modern standing
seam roofing product Uni-Solar sells now. They learned that the batten they
used liked to dig into the module laminate and cause problems. Their new
product is a different design and won't have that problem.

Also, a little perspective on the Million Solar Roofs program. You have to
remember that prior to the MSR Initiative about all we saw out of the Feds
on the solar production side was Power Towers and the concept of Space PV
beaming power back to earth. At least now the focus is on distributed
generation. It's up to us to put the equipment in the right place. The MSR
language, I believe, actually talks about 'PV providing power to a building'
, so the program isn't limited to roofs. MSR is just a catchy phrase , you
know, Marketing, something our industry could do better.

UV issue

With the ozone hole over our part of the globe we are getting a measured
annual irradiance 50% more than the Northern hemisphere at the same
latitude. We have a 15 minute burn time here in the summer, the sun
cream industry is booming.

I think Australia is also a significant testing ground with severe
climatic and desert conditions. The Government is pouring millions into
RE because it is a very high CO2 producer. There is a heap of Unisolar
going in so watch this space ??
