Ramping up 3hp pump motor [RE-wrenches]

Hello Windy,
You are correct. I called Franklin (mfg. of motor) and the tech said it 
was not a good idea to run single phase with VFD's. Causes clattering 
relays for starters.
This is the largest pump that I have dealt with so need some more 
thoughts on how to operate this thing on the battery back-up for about 
8-12 hours. Here's the poop:
4" 3hp single phase 240v
THD about 600 - 650'
start up current- a paltry 82 amps for about 1/2 sec., although the tech 
said it could get started as low as 10kw
feeds pressurizing tank w/pressure switch
With the info on my preliminary system size (initial post) what do I 
need to look at to get this thing to run....dedicated inverter? ($$$),
Timer switch?......any thoughts would be appreciated.
