I routinely use a good grade of welding cable as well. It isn't UL,
but has a 600V rating on the jacket which usually satisfies all
inspectors except those that WANT the RE system to fail. For the
others, I have some UL stuff, but it's expensive!
I shrink (with internal adhesive) all crimps. I use black cable but
have black and red shrink. Cheaper than two rolls of cables and less
hassle to transport to the job.
I don't treat the posts at all other than polishing them with a wire
brush prior to bolting the cables on. I figure that sooner or later
you've got to clean the posts anyway and with goop, you've got a
bigger mess. I am a believer in Hydrocaps, however, which keep the
tops and posts of the batteries MUCH cleaner, especially if you kick
up the finish CC voltage pretty high which I usually do.
