FW: Globalization of electricity [RE-wrenches]

Wrenches, John V. and Carl,

I did a quick review of this website and it sounds like these folks are well
meaning and probably right about many of their views. The only new thing
they seem to be proposing are analytical tools to help evaluate renewable
energy connected to transmission and distribution systems. That is arguably
not very new since these activities have been going on for decades.

My point in the below email was that we in the PV business get so wrapped up
in the details of what can be improved and what is bad about current
products, that we (I) often lose sight of the fact that we are working with
one of THE MOST AMAZING TECHNOLOGIES THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN. We sell it
short when we look only at things like the environmental benefits, because
its capabilities are far more significant.

I meant no slight to John in this message--It was more a slam on myself and
others of us that don't do a very good job of showing people the wonder of
PV. Global electrification, world peace, and solving hunger are all noble
objectives (the prime objectives of GENI.ORG)--but they are apple pie and
motherhood and fail to get down to the specifics of what can be done right
now with the great technology we have in our hands.

Developing countries need to "leap-frog" existing electrical technologies of
electrical transmission and distribution, not replicate them. Just as
cellular technology has flourished in developing countries, PV makes way
more sense than building a transmission and distribution system that they
cannot afford or maintain.

Enough of my rant,

Bill.

Wrenches,

I heard there is an amazing technology that actually converts energy
generated 93,000,000 miles away to electricity here on earth. The energy is
transmitted through an amazing technology (still being studied) with almost
no losses. Many people call this energy source--light--but few have figured
out how to make it convert to electricity here on earth. Maybe somebody
should look into this---;-).

Sorry for the humor, but this message needed really big "DUH".

bill.
