Hi Tump,
Sorry to miss your call. I thought the easiest and most efficient way to
handle your question was via e-mail, so here goes.
Yes batteries will freeze (flooded wet cell, lead-acid). At what
temperature? Well, that depends on the State of Charge (SOC).
Specific Gravity
Corrected to 80oF (26.7oC) Freezing Temperature
1.280 -92oF (-69oC)
1.265 -72.3oF (-57.4oC)
1.250 -62oF (-52.2oC)
1.200 -16oF (-26.7oC)
1.150 +5oF (-15oC)
1.100 +19oF (-7.2oC)
Table 1. SG vs. SOC
% Charged Specific Gravity % Charged Specific Gravity
100% 1.255 – 1.275 25% 1.165–1.155
75% 1.215 – 1.235 0% 1.130-1.110
50% 1.200 – 1.180
So, in short, if the battery is adequately charged, it will not freeze.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Jamie
