LED's for sign lighting revisited [RE-wrenches]

I remember a while back, someone on the list was sharing successful 
use of LED;s for sign lighting.  I am unsure how to size the thing, 
ie how many LEDs per square area.  I have heard it said that 1 LED 
roughly equals 1 watt incandescent.  Any comments?
