I won't go less than double the inverter rating anymore with gensets.  
So the Kohler 12 kW is probably the lowest cost, decent match for the 
XW.  Otherwise you're just over working the genset, which usually aren't 
designed for continuous duty.  It keeps the voltage stable enough to not 
disconnect when a surge (like that sewage pump) comes on.

As far as 1800 rpm, I don't know anything under 20 kw in propane.  The 
fuel consumption of a 20kw at 25% is very comparable to the 12kW at 
50%.  I've been considering diesel, but just always have been worried 
about cold starting in the mountains.
