[RE-wrenches] Cedar Shake roofs

Hi Howie,

We bump into wood shake roofs from time to time in the Bay Area. I second
what others have said. In particular, make sure the roof is not too old. We
have a cutoff of 10 years old or less in order to consider
self-waterproofing the install. Otherwise, we insist on roofer engagement.
The problem with an old wood shake roof, or really any tile roof for that
matter, is that the underlayment (felt paper) starts to fall apart and the
whole job becomes a big mess once you start working on the roof. Even if
you do a good job installing the Quickmount shake mounts, the failed
underlayment will result in unpredictable leaks. Bad news. Old shake
shingles get brittle too. Anyway, here's a video by Quickmount on their
