These photos might not make much sense without context, but they were taken with Seek Thermal’s IR camera for an Android device. I now use the FlirOne

It was an exceptionally hot day, which helped the contrast. I’d say this was good enough to identify that there were rafters present, but it wasn’t good enough to identify rafter location with precision (e.g., identify the edge of a rafter to within +/- ½”). I play with this whenever I get a chance, and I’ve never had better results with anything below the laboratory-grade equipment we use.

You would have to have a serious heat differential from inside to outside for that too work.  And it still wouldn't get you closer than a hammer.  Also, most attics are ventilated so they would be close to the outside temp anyway.  Usually the insulation is on the ceiling not under the roof.

On a cold night with a vaulted ceiling is the only time it "might" work.
