Kirk,

I agree with Mark. Knowing the peak surge of each of your motor loads would tell
you a lot.

All four of the loads you named are motor loads, each with a starting surge of
anywhere from 5-10 times the  individual motor's FLA. Starting 2 or more of
these simultaneously could be pushing you over the limit. Since the problem has
only occurred twice in a week, with motors that start relatively frequently,
that rare, random simultaneous start seems the likely cause.

An imbalance in the loads on the individual legs of the transformer 240 volt
secondary could also be contributing to the problem. If so, you may do well to
feed the 120 volt loads from a separate subpanel, using the transformer for only
the 240 loads, as you suggest.
