The day of reckoning is nigh.  There are many people out there who have 
been living in complacency for years now with tolerable energy costs.  I 
have one fellow [I suspect he's elderly, I've never met him]who has an 
all electric home which includes electric furnace AND baseboard heating. 
 He also has two 55 year old refrigerators!  Imagine what these things 
are consuming.  I shudder to think what this poor man is paying this 
winter in Illinois staying comfortable not to mention sane.  He's got to 
be fit to be tied, as they say.  What do you tell people in such 
instances?  The truth?  I've been holding off on doing anything so far 
so as to not demoralize him further.  My natural gas costs have actually 
tripled since last year.
Even that isn't the best recommendation anymore.  E. F. Schumacher had a 
point with his "Small is Beautiful" notions.  Scaling back on one's 
expectations is now a very serious thing to consider.  I pity old people 
on fixed incomes.  That must be a nightmare knowing you have no 
recourse.  I think it's a certainty that next year will be flushing many 
people out from their dream state.  For us, that can be fortuitous, but 
what does that portent generally.  Trouble ahead.
