I started thinking about that after I posted it. If the wind was already
blowing, why would you need to create more of it by twirling the
thermometers? Could be I'm remembering some science lesson badly on the
wet/dry bulbs. I did look up the formula for calculating wind chill after
that, and it's quite complicated (for me), and not something we could post
here, as it involves some notation that ASCII won't format.

I may be wrong, but I think that the term 'wind chill' is incorrect for
the type of convective heat loss that you are describing here. I think we
both agree that inanimate objects don't experience the same type of 'wind
chill' that creatures (especially we basically naked humans) do, and that
an object sitting out in a 0°F ambient with a -30°F wind chill will only
get down to 0°F more quickly, and so additional freezing hazards don't apply.
Another note, a congratulation, really. I've been lurking in another list
about Biodiesel, and I've got to say, we are a lot more polite and get
along much better than they do. Disagreements on procedure or technique
quickly turn into name-calling and outright flames online. Good for us!
