You are correct and my math is faulty. C/20 for a 500 mA-hr cells is 
indeed 25 mA.

C/20 is a float rate--as in float 24 hours per day for days at a 
time. Most alkaline cells can be recharged at the C/10 rate for 24 
hours without damage.

Where you don't want to space them out is at recharge rates of C/3 
and faster. Leaving the cells on too long at these high currents will 
overheat the cells and cause them to vent. Venting will cause the 
cells to dry our and fail in short order.
