I agree that your referral list should be for installers, whether they
sell equipment or not. But, no dealers only. My personal preference is to
do the whole job, including design, equipment specification, site analysis,
installation, testing, and long-term hand-holding. The markup on equipment
is what pays for all those other things beyond the wire twisting of the
installation.
As far as working both (all) ends of a contracting business, sales as
well as installations, that's just part of the life of a contractor. A sole
proprietor wears many hats in any given day: marketing, sales,
design/engineering, worker (the easiest part), accounting, collections, etc.
It's a pain in the butt sometimes, and usually takes alot more than 40 hours
a week, but beats punching a time clock and 10 days vacation a year.
Doesn't it? Maybe I shoulda gotten into real estate instead?
