DC answering machine [RE-wrenches]

All,
    Following up to my posting on the 24-12 converter:  Steve is right about
problems relating to ground isolation.  My answer is incomplete.  We have
more work with cell phones around here, where the goal is to supply 12 volts
to run a car-charger for an in-home cell phone.  No isolation problems in
this case.  Except for one small area, everyone in northern NM that has a
land line also can get voice mail service.
