Have you considered a Jack Rabbit system, which requires no pipe and no 
dams but resembles a tiny torpedo? The "Aquair" does require a 
land-mounted frame to submerge/raise with changing creek levels and as 
protection during flash floods. The literature claims up to 2.4 kW/day 
from any fast running stream (about 9 mph) with only 13 in. of clear 
water. A stream speed of 6 mph produces about 1.5 kWH/day. I have no 
experience with them, but am intrigued with the design.
