saving old 'new' batteries [RE-wrenches]

I've seen exactly the same thing. these L-16's sat for at least a 
year, fully discharged, with the electrolye level way below the plate 
tops.  Can't say they worked like new, but definitely held a decent 
charge. I was baffled!
