Travis,
According to Rick at RVPP, the factory default setting will work with
the typical modern module, with MPP around 17 volts.
We are often putting these in existing systems, with mixed modules, old
modules, Quad-Lams, and Tri-Lams, so we usually have reason to tweak. For
awhile my home system was based on mud Quad-Lams, which had a 53V VOC (24V
nominal). I set MPPT all the way up and still could have gone farther. I
was getting winter input-output display boosts of 50%--of course, 50% more
mud is still mud, and I replaced the array.
The key is that there's only one setting on the RV50, so you end up with
a "happy medium" with mixed array outputs. Occasionally we will bring in
part of an array on the old controller, figuring more total output with no
boost on unmatched modules. I did that recently with an SB2000 when one
module was a 33-cell Arco M75. Client had undersized array wire anyway, so
we used it for the M75 and ran new wire for the rest.
Rick at RVPP knows his theory, his code, and his wrenching, and has been
accessible to us. He also sez he's trying to keep his product away from the
internet and HP discounter scum, to give us a fighting chance at skilled
design.
Re the same shunt: Yes. And by the way, two Tri-Mets can use the same
shunt too, according to Ralph Heise. Makes sense to me.
