Hello Wrenches,

When cabling a.c. single conductors through glands in steel plate, it is
normal practice to cut slots (with a hacksaw) in the plate between the
holes. This breaks the magnetic path and prevents the current flow. Sharkey
is correct, a lot of heat (and vibration) can be generated in the steel
plate by the induced current - I have found this in incorrect installations
and cured it by unscrewing the glands and cutting slots from hole to hole.
You can usually get away without removing the cables if you use a small
enough hacksaw blade.

In John's d.c. case perhaps he can improve matters by cutting a slot between
the two glands on the top? This will effectively make one (magnetic) hole
for the two conductors.

Keep it up gang; anyone know where I can get a 10kW 240V d.c. to 230V 50Hz
a.c. stand-alone inverter - for a 1935 vintage hydro turbine with original
d.c. generator?
