With regards to getting paid for all the up front work. I agree $500 
sounds like a good amount to charge and more if there is lots of 
travel involved to and from the proposed site. Back when I was 
wrenching, I used to charge $100 for the consumption estimate, site 
survey, and system design. But systems have grown more complex and 
larger and what with inflation and all, five bills sounds reasonable 
to me. I used to apply this fee to the purchase price of the system.

Part of this up front work is letting the prospective customer know 
that you won't install hardware you didn't sell him.
