Induction Generators [RE-wrenches]

Richard and Wrenches,

I am working with two locals and Bob Matthews of Appropriate Energy
(250-679-8589, British Columbia) on the installation of a grid-tied 25 kW
hydropower induction generator system. Bob designed the system. The two
local guys laid all the pipe, set the machinery, and have made
arrangements to sell the power to our utility.

Assuming that the utility is cooperative, it looks like a fairly
straightforward installation electrically. A 575 volt induction motor will
be driven by a hydro turbine and tied to a utility 480 volt line through a
custom switchgear panel. The higher voltage motor is used due to magnetic
limitations (saturation) and losses which require the motor voltage to be
about 20% higher than the desired generation voltage. The local utility
requested that the system include safety switch gear that will disconnect
the generator from the grid during utility outages. Thomson and Howe of
British Columbia will build the switchgear panel.

Bob Matthews said that there are very few of these installations in the U.S.
that he knows of. He also indicated that it might be difficult to find the
appropriate induction generator for lower voltage systems (120 or 240 VAC).

I'll forward Bob Matthews coordinates to Neil
