Kurt...

Thanks for the info on the external parts, settings etc. for the 'solar
only' set up.

I welcome some thought about the suggestion I made that would seem to
address the silent mode question and the wind input factor.

I would like to keep the discussion 'alive' if possible.

Typically I would have solar fed through MPPT and wind feeding the battery
bank direct but use a C40 as a backstop.

The settings are typically as follows:

note: I am using a 48 Volt 'Absolyte' sealed battery bank.

Trace float 53.6
Solar MPPT 54.4
Wind C40 54.8
Trace bulk 54.2
Trace EQ 54.6
Trace sell 53.8

Now in order to prevent the trace from charging from the grid, the
suggestion is to lower the float to say 48 volts. This would limit the
battery charging to the solar and wind input unless the state of charge
dropped significantly.

A contactor in the AC1 hot leg would be controlled by two on board relays
one which connected the grid just under the sell voltage under conditions
when the sun or wind input was active enough. The other would connect the
grid just above the lowered float voltage to allow for a grid powered charge
when the solar and wind was not keeping up with the loads.

The would seem to address the inefficiency issue relating to the need to be
able to operate in silent or search mode and prevent the constant floating
of the bank from the grid.

The down side would be shorter battery life due to increased cycling in
times when the solar and wind yield was low.

Now I may have missed something, so please can someone improve on the
approach which does not use photo relays or a timing function or shunts,
then please have a go...

Many thanks

Carl Emerson
