DC answering machine [RE-wrenches]

We no longer convert machines to 12 volts because it is hard to find an
answering machine that completely isolates the phone lines from the grounded
power of the battery system.  (Neither phone wire may be grounded, even
several thousand ohms fouls the phone functionality).  So we use the 12 volt
to 12 volt isolator that removes the ground from your 12 volt battery and
provides isolated 12 volt to the answer machine. Very little loss in that
process, costs about $25.  However it does not convert voltages, so you
still need a 24 to 12 converter.  Unfortunately all those I have tested,
Zane and Solar Converters both, do not isolate or remove the ground.  So now
two devices are required in series to do that job.

The solar converters EQ24/12 unit is a great though costly way to do this if
you have other needs for 12 volt as well.  It lets you draw 12 volts direct
from half the battery while balancing the voltage of both halves very
precisely.  This means you get good stable noise-free battery power at 12
volts, for those items that are consumer oriented and cannot be found in 24
volts, like RABB motion sensing light control, alarm systems, cell phones,
intercoms etc.  So if you have enough needs,to justify the cost, that is the
best way to get 12 volts from a 24 volt system, then put the $25 isolator on
for the answer machine.  Also a lightning protector added to the phone line
before the answer machine is good here when you get your equipment as the
shortest link between a phone line and a grounded battery system.
