The formula for amperage (single phase AC) as found in Ugly's Electrical
Reference is:

 Amps  =   HP X 746 / (Voltage  X  %EFF  X  Power Factor)

1/2 HP submersible pumps I have installed draw about 9.6 amps (117VAC).  I have
seen the start windings draw as much as 25 amps.
