John,

I know that you were only kidding (I hope), about bidding for the referral.
That would be a self-defeating waste of time, in my opinion.  Better to set
the fee up-front, that everyone would expect.  In real estate, it is usually
20 to 25% of what I would make on a project.  It doesn't have to be that
high, because, in many cases, the margin isn't that much.  Maybe 10% is more
realistic.  Setting the limit now would be more productive than getting into
bidding wars or any hard feelings later because a negotiation didn't go ones
way.  And territories sounds like a good idea.  That's how "big business"
does it!
