That being said, they do have a 48VDC charger the Skylla TG48/50 The input range is 185-264 vac @ 45-65 Hz, so balancing your gen isn’t an issue but the 50 A charge might be a bit limiting. I have used these in the past and they do work well.
The straight Skylla 24VDC chargers can be paralleled but it does not appear that the 48 TG series can be. Perhaps asantosbuch@victronenergy.com might be able to address this in more detail.

On Nov 9, 2021, at 7:09 PM, Nick A Lucchese <lucchesesolar@me.com> wrote:

Greetings Wrenches,

With the large majority of my installations being full time off grid and LiFePO4 solutions I am more frequently observing that quite a few of my sites can make more use of their generator’s output if there was additional charging resources available. I’m fully aware of the problems of adding load on the generator that the main inverter/chargers cannot detect. For obvious reasons the most elegant solution would be to parallel additional inverters so that all the devices can work and communicate together but with some reasonable strategies and planning I believe I can still come up with some good solutions to charge the batteries up faster and not have to buy an extra Radian or VFX every time I need to do so. At the very least I intend to employ one of these solutions at my neighbor’s so that the amount of noise pollution that hits my head this winter is reduced somewhat.

Has anyone else found a go to 48v charger for these scenarios? Seems like the larger high current chargers for industrial batteries lack the programmability I desire and cost similar to inverter/chargers. I’ve had a lot of experience with Iota over the years but would rather have something with higher current output and programmability. Right now it appears that the Phocos Anygrid may be a pretty decent option particularly on a cost/amp charger comparison. The 48v 5KW unit apparently employs up to 80 amps dc of charging. Sites with imbalance concerns would need to add a step down transformer to keep things balanced on the generator so I do realize there is that additional expense as well. This would be the first time I’ve played with this particular inverter which makes it even more ideal if I employ it at my neighbor’s where I can hike over to observe and fine tune. Idle consumption is kinda high so there would definitely be additional order of operation required to initiate charging but I do feel the benefits of greater fuel efficiency outweigh the hassles. This project aside I am quite intrigued by this inverter’s unique offerings in the way that it can be deployed. If anyone else has any feedback regarding the Anygrid I’d love to hear it.

Also, I’m not very familiar with Victron’s products nor how they’re priced. Perhaps they’ve got some affordable chargers or inverter/chargers? Midnite DIY series, I’m a little confused as to how their chargers are rated or if the 48v version is even available right now? The price sure is nice.

Thanks for the input and wisdom as always, Nick

_______________________________________________
List sponsored by Redwood Alliance

Pay optional member dues here: http://re-wrenches.org

List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org

Change listserver email address & settings:
http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org

There are two list archives for searching.
