<div dir="ltr">Jeremy, <br><br>If they dropped and the voltage stayed within .2 to .4 of each other over this time, they are at or very close to the end of life, they need to be replaced. The fact that they dropped so fast indicates the end of life for those batteries. <br><br>Positive post-growth is caused by two things. High temperatures, and over current while charging. Most FLA's don't like to be charged at over 20% of the C/20 rate. So assuming a 400 ah battery @ C/20 charging currents over 80 amps will increase temperatures so much that you will see the positive post rising out of the battery. It can happen to both, but it's more prevalent with the positive posts. <br><br>Sorry Jeremy, but this battery bank has seen its best days... I don't think the customer has much time with these left, they definitely won't make it thru another fall/winter with these. I Isolated the two strings and load tested. I ran about 1500 watts for 10-12 min while monitoring the voltages.

Open Cell and Shorted. <br>

Open Cells are more resistive and "Eat up" charging voltage which denies voltage and charging potential to the rest of the bank so the entire bank sags. This is the most common type of failure. <br>

Shorted Cells are less resistive so they allow voltage and current to pass on to the rest of the cells in the string. This causes an overcharge condition because the dead cell isn't dropping any voltage and the rest of the cells in the string become "overcharged". <br>
<br>
Sometimes SG's will look good, but when the bank is under load you will see the voltage drop off quickly. This is often the shorted cell. <br>
<br>
Battery SG's are like Goldilocks and the three bears.. There is too high... Too low and Just right... Too low and you lose capacity and this causes sulfation, which will cause overheating, excessive water use, and will lead to failure. This is the most
common way an FLA battery bank dies is low SG's are not corrected soon enough and the bank sulfates. <br>
<br>
Too high, and you'll get great capacity, for a while, but that higher acidity will cause corrosion on the plates which will act a lot like sulfation. On these, you will often see a darker electrolyte as the higher acidity/corrosion is eating away at the active
material of the plates.

<div>To figure this out what you need to do is... <br>
<br>
1. Charge the bank to what you think is full or close to it.. <br>
2. Find the 10 Hour Discharge Rate of the bank. (C/10 Discharge Current)</div>
<div>3 Apply load as close as you can get it by running loads in the house. You will be running this test for 2-5 hours depending on test results. </div>
<div>4. Monitor battery voltages during this test every 30-60 mins. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>individual battery voltages should stay pretty close to each other as they discharge, If you start to see one or two batteries sag in voltage before the rest you have weak or dying cells. <br>
My bet is you have 1 or two cells that have failed and this is the reason for the LBCO... <br>
