There is a provision in the California building code that states: though shall not cut, drill or notch structural members. Our interpretation is a driven lag is not the same as a drilled hole. </div><div><br></div><div>We had to pay a structural engineer to draft a generic letter allowing driven lags as long as they were: no greater than 5/16\u201d, not penetrating more than 3\u201d and not closer than 1/2\u201d from edge of rafter. </div><div><br></div><div>California expedited solar permitting guidelines have a nifty drawing showing acceptable lag placement at least 0.5\u201d from either edge of rafter. Providing this drawing and specifying a rafter edge finding tool bolstered our case. </div><div><br></div><div>If you want to look at the docs contact me off-line.
