Move up and down a course or two if needed.) After the tap test, we drill a 1/8 hole and inserted a bent landscape flag wire and rotate it, feeling for contact with the side of the rafter. This really encourages being responsible to ensure the pilot hole is under the flashing and gets sealed. And it still wouldn't get you closer than a hammer. Also, most attics are ventilated so they would be close to the outside temp anyway.
