<p class="MsoNormal">As Aquion said, loosening the main nut will destroy the battery. I can vouch for that as well, not my doing, but I could not recover the batteries where that had been done. I tightened the nuts and got just about one cycle before they were
gone.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I suspect that the temperature cycling of the batteries enhanced creep of the case and active materials to the point where there was no longer adequate compression, and so they are failing. It could be that if they had mfg them with steel
cases and permanent layer level compression they might have been longer lived. <o:p>

<p class="MsoNormal">One thing about being able to take the layers apart is that they are much easier to move around that way. Each layer is only about 30 lbs. Then you can find creative uses for the aluminum bases and high strength threaded rod from them.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt">I am getting more and more call about orphaned Aquion systems that have gone bad. Many of the systems have one or two "layers" that have gone bad. Voltage spikes up to the 14-15V range while charging and cratering
to zero if even the tiniest load is put on it (e.g. turning on a charge controller, like I said...tiny). So I do not believe charging that particular "layer" with 6V charger would fix the problem. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
