How many lugs were under the bolt? It looks possibly like it
didn't have enough threads into the shunt. I replace the bolt with
a longer one, if I have more than one lug. Also I use the thin
lugs that come in Outback, Magnum, and Midnite equipment; I never
use those super thick lugs that most electrical supplies have.
They are way too thick and usually don't play well with shunt
blocks or battery posts. They also are not usually meant for the
fine stranded cable usually used. Standard THHN in 4/0 puts way
too much strain on bolts and hardware. I get UL listed thin lugs
from Del City and Quick Cable, and use Cobra X Flex or the dual
listed locomotive cable. None of this may be your problem
however.
Anyone seen this before, the bolt on a shunt inside a Magnum
inverter snapped right off, other half inside the shunt. I was
tightening it but I don\u2019t believe excessively. It appears to be
crystallized. Magnum is replacing the shunt but it\u2019s my good luck
that the job is 5 hours into a remote backwater along a punishing
road.
